May Flight Plans Kami! AYYYYOS!

March 30, 2009

I'm excited for General Conference. Everyone is here. I'm sorry to say that the MTC choir won't be singing this time. We were all wondering when we arrived here, but they said we hadn't been asked this time.
General conference meant that this was the last week in Sacrament Meeting with the Zone. Our batch sang Kailangan ko Kayo - I need thee - and we had a wonderful testimony meeting. Elder Thorn got up, and bore an amazing testimony. He told us how much it has grown here, and I've certainly seen that. I remember one day when we were briefly teaching each other the first lesson -- we gave each other 5 minutes each so we could figure out what we could leave out to simplify our plan -- and after mine, Elder Thorn was teaching, and he got to the first vision, and gave it in Joseph Smith's words, and then he bore his testimony about Joseph Smith. The spirit entered so strongly, and with tears in his eyes he told me that he knew that Joseph Smith really was a prophet of God. He really did see God the Father, and Jesus Christ. And I knew it too.
It's an amazing thing about teaching, that the principles that I've borne testimony of have lodged in my heart, and they get stronger and stronger until I can tell someone on the phone or during a chat that the gospel has been restored and tell them that with all my heart. That is the best feeling in the world.
Of course I remember your letter, Sarah! Thank you so much! I'm writing one back. Thanks to everybody that's been sending letters -- I wish I had time to reply to more. By the way, I've got a letter written to Great Grandma Peck, but I don't know her address. If you could send it sometime before 7-ish I can get it and send it out. By the way, I found one of her great grandchildren here, a Sister Peck going to Hong Kong, I think. She'd a grand-daughter of Donald, and daughter of David and Rachel -- I think. That was pretty cool. By the way, Elder Dicter (sp?) from swimming wanted to get Christian's address. His is 230 Fuhriman Drive Providence, UT 84332.
That's great to hear you're all busy making soap and making pretzels! And I'm WAY excited about Alex's call to Indianapolis! That's amazing news! I haven't heard anything more than you about Sister Iverson's ribs, except that she was supposed to have a check-up today, I thought, and they'd make the final decision there. Scary stuff. We've all been praying for her here.
Yes, Tinangapp namin ang mga FLIGHT PLANS namin! My heart just about stopped when I saw that stack of papers. I was trying not to be excited all day, but it didn't work very well. We leave on the 6th, about 5:30 at night, to Salt Lake, and then San Fransisco, and then Taiwan, and then Manilla. We leave on the 6th, and get there on the 9th (nakakatawa iyen, di ba? -- that's funny, no?) but we cross the date-line. I'll write home a couple more experiences, I'm out of time.
Thanks for everything (and the phone card) I think I'm all set, but I'll write if I need anything else. I'll send home the camera card today, and talk to you next week!

Chris' March 30th email

well i was going to send fotos but the the camera doesn´t feel like letting me do it. sorry. everything is really great down here. we had a great week and yes, we do get to see conference live. im really exited. this week we found a great guy -his name is freddy. he was a reference for us and it was cool because it was a little far out and we can only find him after 8. but we planned him any way and got to the lesson and found one of the members there with her two kids. apparently she is his new girlfriend and they were just talking about going to church the next day. and he was a little nervous and wasn´t sure if it was ok to go if they were dating. and so we got there and told him he was more than welcome in the church. and he came. it was really great. adriana also went with her son augstin. and they are doing awesome. so life is just great down here. oh yeah and talking about jokes of mother nature, down here we had a few storms and it got to where you could feel the fall in the air and then this week has been a fryer. it is really hot again. all the better huh. hey tell trudie thanks for the letter. have a fun week and we´ll talk to yall next week. nos vemos.

Loren's Mar. 23, 2009 E-mail

Wow, peas! I wonder if they have peas in the Philippines. Happy Birthday, Dad! I was thinking of you on Friday, all the buds are out on the trees and the flowers are growing. It really feels like spring here.
I'm so glad to hear that both Grandma Peck's are doing great. tell them "hi" for me.
hmmm, my capitalization and exclamation point capabilities just vanished. i forgive chris for all computer problems that i thought might not have been the computer. and i still don't know how to open pictures. i apologize, chris.
last night i witnessed my first tie bargaining in the mtc, and there were some awesome ties going around. i also witnessed the offering table, free for all scene. our room got more candy than we'll ever eat, book of mormon pictures for our walls, shampoo, and a lot more that we'll toss back in the pile in a few weeks.
it was a lot of good-bye's this week. on tuesday, we bid farewell to the district ahead of us. there were a lot of amazing missionaries and i learned so much from them. then yesterday, our branch president was released, and that was hard. we all really loved president clark. we are looking forward to recieving our flight plans, sana (hopefully) about thursday this week.
on tuesday, elder l. tom perry came, and spoke about companionships, --it was inspiring. our favorite part about tuesdays is that after the devotional, we meet as a district in our classroom on the 5th floor of the p.p.pratt building and all comment on what we've learned. it really brings us closer as a district.
the best part of the week was the temple dedication yesterday. our district had the opportunity to usher, and as all of those missionaries filed in and filled up the huge auditorium, i was amazed at how quiet it was -- i've never seen that before. it really did feel perfect in there, just like an extension of the temple. the spirit was so strong, especially when in the dedicatory prayer president monson prayed for the missionaries. alam ko na mahal tayo ng diyos. alam ko na gusto niya na maligaya ako. alam ko na mahalaga ang mga pamilya sa diyos, at talagang mahalaga ang pamilya ko sa akin. alam ko na gusto ng diyos na magkaroon tayo buhay na walang hanggang kasama pamilya natin.
i love you all. have a great week -
elder peck

Walang Yelo! No Snow!

Monday, March 16, 2009

It was cool to receive the pictures you sent of the prime weather conditions in Cache Vally. Here, there is no snow, and I wish there was. We've been studying outside, and the flowers are started to bloom here. I was reading this week in one of our books that Filipinos are fascinated with the change of seasons in the United States, because they've only got two.
Rachel!!! Nalaman ko na kaya mo ito!!! I knew that you could do it! I was so excited to receive your letter, I was giving my companion a play-by-play on our way to lunch. I was "particularly" impressed with aileron -- I'm sure everyone was squirming in their seats when they gave you that one! Great job! Napakagaling si Rachel Peck at spelling. (extremely talented)
That's great about the gum-making, I wish I could've seen all your faces when you tried it for the first time.
Hey Lando, it really is pretty fun here. It's a lot like school. We have PE every day and eat *a lot* of food! We sleep here and wake up early in the mornings. I haven't baptized anyone yet, but I do get to teach a lot. I wish I could make gum too!
I got a letter from Daniel Mason, and he compared the MTC to the garden of Eden, and I had to laugh because it's kind of true.

This week, on Thursday, we taught all of lesson 1 in Tagalog at our teaching appointment. We spent 45 minutes talking and teaching to a sister that returned from Angeles 2 weeks ago. It was incredible. I'm not sure how it happened, but we taught an entire lesson in a foreign language and something we didn't memorize. This past week the language has really accelerated, and I know the spirit is working with us. I'm not sure how we meet all the language skills deadlines, but it happens. On Saturday we went our first day with no English (almost), and by the end of it, I was missing English so much! I can't describe how tired I was of not being able to express myself, or say anything humorous, or tell any experiences. But I know that if I can get through that here, it will be so much the better. As far as the gospel goes, I can chat with someone, but it's still hard just to talk about anything.
It felt so good to teach in a different language, I'm so excited. Teaching is a skill I'd never thought about before, including asking questions, and finding people real concerns and questions. Thanks again for the letters, it's so much fun to hear from you.
Mom, I'll send some scriptures (hopefully),
Mahal kita,
Elder Peck

Would the real Elder Peck please step forward?

buenisimo... well today we played futbol (soccer) and elder sandoval kicked butt. he is half latino and his dad is brown. so he naturally has an ability to play and dominate on the canchita (field) well, i would like to give congrats to the hermanita on the big ol win of the district spelling bee. elder sandoval was in one when he was in 5th grade. but was homeschooled after that. he is a male chatty kathy. well. i want to say i love you all. sorry i dont really have a lot to say this week. but write back soon!!! oh saturday we have interviews with the prez of the mission so if you sent me a package i will get it he he ; D

well this is the real elder peck. elder sandaval is really great. but hey, we had an awesome week. first of all i did get the bag and the camera. THANKS SO MUCH. the camera is so coool. i have fun with it. so this sunday almost none of our investigators came to church. but the branch pres. brought a family and it was really cool. and then julian came and he is leaving today for haiti. but thank you all so much for the email it was a good one. hey but does any one know about water polo????? love yall and hope you have a great week. chou

Monday, March 9, 2009

Ha Ha, thanks for the "short letter". I completely forgot to tell you last week, or maybe it was two weeks ago, I found the wallet/card/drivers liscense all in the important documents folder. I havent found the camera cord yet, and I can't figure out how to open attached pictures.
I'm glad the camera card got to you, I found out that both my companion and Elder Kurkzodina in my district lost camera cards or small tapes in the mail recently.
Hmmmm, extra journals. . . I don't need any more right now, in fact, I hate to admit that I'm not getting very far in my big one at the moment. I don't know if it's just at the MTC, but there is very little time to journal write. I do, however, write in the Moleskine almost every day, sometimes twice a day, any experiences that I have. That has been really nice. Maybe if you find any paper like the kind that E. Dymock has, you can send me some, so I can put it under my moleskine page when I write, and send you experiences weekly.
I have recieved many letters, thanks so much! I usually get one every other day, and it is wonderful. I only have about an hour or two every week that we're allowed to write letters, so I haven't had time to write anyone except you -- I hope to return some letters this week and next.
I sleep on the top bunk -- I was the last one to the room on our first day. I'm farthest from the door, and we've got a really funny room. At first, the heat was always on, and our room was toasty, so we talked to workers at the front desk about it, and they said they'd try their best to fix it, and the next day, our room was freezing. We've hit a kind of happy medium now, thankfully.
That's great about the spelling bee coming up, Rachel! I know you'll do great.
In Tagalog, everything is spelled phonetically, which makes spelling really easy. My favorite word this week was pinakamakapangyarihan, which means "all-powerful" or "all-mighty", with pagpapakumbaba, (humility) running a tight second. Good luck! I hope you do awesome!
Sarah, I wish I could play tennis here. Really bad. I had to tell my companion when I read that you'd played in a tournament, I was so proud. I bet you did amazing, but just make sure that I can still win sometimes when I get back.
This week I got to play the piano in priesthood, and it was so great! I'm a little rusty, though. I might be able to play next week as well, we'll see. Right now we're singing "Behold, the Lillies of the Field" in MTC choir, and it's beautiful. I love the words, I never noticed them before. Tonight elder Thorn and I teach the first lesson in Tagalog, and I just hope and pray we're ready!!! It's more of just a practice, what we call a "teach-o-rama" to the other missionaries.
So good to here from you! I hope everyone is doing well -- I'm doing super, and every day gets better. The spirit is strong here, and it's helping me learn, I know it is. I'm amazed, when I think that we're really learning this language, and that in a matter of months, we'll be able to teach the Filipinos in Tagalog.

Mahal kita,
Elder Peck

From Chris 3/9/09

hey, dad's my example right... so i can write a letter like his. especially since my reward for last week is already gone. but hey i have another bribe. who knows anything about water polo? any body got my back?

im doing amazing. and mom, that family, guess what, went to church again. and ULGA WENT TO CHURCH TOO. it was so cool. so if you didn´t know, we had district conference. and so pres. ashby came up and talked sat. and sunday. and also decided to delegate a little of the time to the zone leaders. and we had to talk and give examples of using three steps to teaching. teach testify and promise blessings. it was fun but as soon as we got done with that we had to get down and plan for zone conference. but after the adult session we went to julian and his family. (the family that went to church). he was home and trying to get everything done on his house before he leaves with the army for 6 months. and on sunday he had some friends coming over and they were going to tear off the roof and put another on. but they said that they would try. and so they went and when we talked with him he said that he had left the guys working on the house and took his family to the church. cool huh. well thats all i got for today. and hey thanks kristen for the stuff. i love yall. loren too. nos vemos

Loren's Friday Letter & Pictures!

Loren and roommates.
Loren's district.
Loren and companion, Elder Thorn

Dear Family,
It's great to hear from you!
Brendan, Wow! If I got 4 shots in my leg, I'd ask for 2 suckers.
Landon, Thanks for the joke! Happy St. Patrick's day to you too! Guess what--there's no snow here. In fact, this morning when we walked to the temple, workers were mowing the missionary field. My favorite thing to do here (well, maybe) is go to gym, and I really hope they let us play outside soon. Elder Thorn and I are sitting outside now, in flip-flops and short-sleeved shirts behind the Woodruff building by the statue of the elders riding bikes. It's one of my favorites.

Rachel, This language is really cool. Here are some especially cool things: When you want to get someone's attention in the Philippines, you can make a kissing sound, and they might hiss/tss as well. They don't point with their fingers, they point with their lips and say diyen (there) or do on (way over there). Also, when they want someone to come, they put out their hand with the palm down and wag their fingers toward their palm. When they don't understand or want you to repeat, they open their mouth. Our teacher just got back from the Philipinas, and he still does all of that. How are you? Be sure to tell me all about the spelling bee next week!

Lindsay, Are you still working out in the mornings? My roommates were really impressed when I showed them "warrior 2" and "upward dog." After sitting down all day my back hurts and those stretches feel really good.

Sarah, How is tennis coming? I bet you can beat dad right now, right? Guess what? Every Wednesday and Sunday here it's all-you-can-eat BYU creamery ice cream, with so many toppings that by the time I get through the line I sometimes forget there's ice cream under it all. I can't believe you're driving! And without any good backseat drivers until September. Tell me all about Honor Choir please! I am hoarse most of the time because we sing so much. Twice a week I get to participate with the MTC choir, every Tuesday night we perform at the Quorum of the 70/12. It's AMAZING. We got to sing with Elder Ballard here. I'm learning to love singing. My favorite is singing the prelude hymns on Sundays and Tuesdays before devotionals with all the missionaries. The Spirit is so powerful. We also sing as a district 2-4 times a day in Tagalog, and believe me, it's hard to concentrate on words like Kailangan ko kayo (I need thee) and hit the right notes at the same time. Good luck with geometry and it's good to hear from you.

Dad and Mom (Tatay at Nanay),
You'll have to keep me up on home teaching, I'm sure it will be good for Jack (Shaun's new home teaching companion). I think the language is coming. . .but it is a struggle. In Chapter 7 of Preach My Gospel it talks about the gift of tongues and how it only comes after struggling and giving all I've got, so I've been trying. I've come to realize that a lot of it is on my shoulders -- going to class is not nearly enough. Thankfully, Elder Thorn is very bright and he is picking up on this language very quickly. He and I SYL (speak your language) together often. In fact, at mealtimes it's a goal to magtagalog lang, and we've been doing it pretty consistently. I realize that nothing short of a miracle can help me learn the language in such a short time, but that's exactly what the Lord has promised. At our Thursday appointments we go to a building called the Teaching Evaluation Center, and they bring in all sorts of Tagalog speaking volunteers to be the investigators. At first I could only pick out a few words, but my comprehension is improving -- sometimes I have to ask paki-ulit (please repeat) or dahau-dahan po (slower please) but it is exciting when they say something like -- Naramdaman (feel) ko (I) na (that) toto (true) ang(is) Alelat ni Mormon habang (while/during) panalangin (prayer) ko (my). Or bumasa (read) mo(I) tankol(about) koy Cristo(Christ) sa (in) pangatlong (3rd) Naphi kabanata (chapter) labing (11) isa. -- And I can understand. It's still very basic. During our conversation on Thursday the "investigator" Sam asked how many members there were in the church house and I missed part of it because I thought he asked how many siblings Elder Thorn had. I got really confused when my companion said "about 150" and it took me a while to jump back in to the conversation. This Thursday is the last time we'll teach a lesson in English.

I've realized more than ever how important it is to have the spirit during the lesson. It makes all the difference, and preparation, humility, and obedience all play into how the lesson goes. There have been a lot of highs and lows, especially in the Referral Center. I have really gained a testimony that the Lord is at the helm as far as missionary work in the RC goes. Some people have really been prepared. It amazes me how many people I talk to are honestly looking for something more spiritually, and how they're needing a miracle, or comfort, and it's exciting to be able to say -- and honestly say --that we've got answers to their questions and testify and ask if we can send the miracle/comfort/answers that is the Book of Mormon with some representatives of Christ straight to their doorstep. I've noticed that when I have an eternal perspective about the people I'm talking to it's so much easier to talk to them.

Elder Loren Peck

Another busy week, but nothing to say!

March 2, 2009
(In our family letter to Chris, Shaun says, "We really enjoy your letters--all two lines. But we'll take what we can get. We'll add two ounces to your next care package for every paragraph you write consisting of at least four meaningful sentences:) " Chris replies:

hey can i keep that same title. hahaha. so how yall doing. im awsome. i have to get writing and would like to put in my own little twist. yall remember the cheese bowls that you sent for valentines day. THEY ARE AMAZING. if you get the picture.

HEY WONDERFUL NEWS. it seems that my backpack was scattered all over montevideo. last night a missionary called me from deo and told me that a guy just drove up to them and gave them one of my camera cards!!!!!!!!!!!! cool huh. hey if were talking about bribes, i just might send it home for a few half pounders of sunflower seeds. maybe by the time im done with my mission ill have all my stuff back. hahaha

dad, how could you even think that i was writing girls. you think it doesn´t take me long enough just to get this off. but i did get a letter from kristen and she said that she listened to your talk in the institute. she thought it was amazing. and that you had made some great accomplishments in your life. (brownie points.) hey we saw some miracles this week. hey, but first i just thought that that was just soooooooooooo funny mom that in the church newsletter you put down that you got more info out of the phone call than the last 8 months. so funny mom. hahaha. but this week we were teaching and being really obediente, but we couldn´t find anyone. so we just prayed for a family and then on sunday we even fasted for it. and on saturday we went and helped a part member family put in the cement roof of his house. he is also really inactive. then on sunday he came to church with all of his family too. for two of them it was the first time in the church. SO COOL HUH. the lord is really mindful and will always answer our prayers and fasts if we keep working for it. i love yall. thanks for the support and all the letters from yall out there. i will probably get my backpack this wednesday. and that will be great. hey kristen you are always welcome to help, in what ever the budget will afford in food. cough cough did i say food. sorry i was just thinking that.hahaha. thanks for the letters and yall support in just praying. (wow that was hard to say) hahaha. OK it is time to go. love yall again. cuidensen

Monday, March 2, 2009

Dear Pamilya ko,
I'm not sure how to pull up the pictures, if you sent pictures, and I'm not sure how to send you pictures (did we pack the camera cord?) I'll probably just mail the card. Thank you so much for sending the sheet music, mom, it's perfect! I usually get 10 or 15 minutes a week to play - but I enjoy it. P-Days are by far the busiest days here, the actual Prepearation part of it is only a few hours. We went to the temple this morning, had personal study, and lunch, and now we wash our clothes, head to companionship study, dinner, class and planning. Writing letters is only allowed on Mondays here, I'm sorry I can't keep a running letter, Mom! But I'll try my best to write once a week. I can print your letters off and read them here, and anyone can email me, but I can only email family. Plus, besides emails from you, dearelders are probably better, because I don't have much time in the lab.
Dad, how are the Burrells and the Thomas' Family and the Borges family? I'd love to get some notes from your talk at the institute, and I'm dying for family history stories. Any stories, as many as possible, and especially the ones you included in that Sunday lesson a few months ago. Glad to hear the excercise is going well, mine too. Kind of. . .
I've only gained 3 pounds so far. We have gym every day, and the first week, I was running and doing push-ups and sit up-s. . . and yoga. . . but after that, volleyball started looking better and better. But I've started running again. My companion plays a lot of volleyball and 4-square, which I didn't really think was a real game, but it's quite the thing to do. I played it the first few days, and it's just like grade school 4 square, except the squares are a lot bigger, and the ball is different.
Sarah -- you're week looks great! Every second is planned out here, except for 3 or 4 hours, and we take time at night to plan every second of those hours.
On thursday we had a language task where we met up with an investigator to take him to church in a jeepny (I don't know how to spell it) Our teacher, Bro. Perry was our driver. We got to know the investigator, Sam, and followed up with his reading and praying in Tagalog. It was a great conversation, even though there were a lot of awkward silences as we were piecing things together in our minds. We started early, and we ended up talking for 15 minutes with him. By the time 10 had passed, we'd run out of things we knew how to say, and when our teacher walked past we said Tapos na! Tapos na! (finished), but he told us to patuloy (keep going/continue) so we had to resort to talking about the size of the church-house and the number of members. We felt pretty good about our teaching appointment with Sam in English after that about Lesson 2, but it really highlighted things I need to work on -- learning investigators concerns, teaching to them, involving them with questions, and building the lesson around the commitment.
Okay, I forgive everyone that writes spacy letters on this LDS. mail thing. The flashing time in the corner is really scary, and there's so much that has gone on this week. I'll write a letter this afternoon, promise. Thanks for your love,
Mahal ko kayo,
Elder Peck
