Oh Do You Know the Mango Man?
Yes, yes we do. And I like to think that it´s because we´re such faithful friends and customers that he let the missionaries from the area he lives in (Pretty much no one lives in our area, they all just work here) into his house to teach him. He told us all about it the other day as we were gracing his 10 peso mango truck with our presence. They apparently talked about us (my mango addiction) and the Elders happened to have a picture of me from a zone meeting or something. Missionary work in all kinds of forms.
Yesterday I got proposed to. It´s common to get proposed to on the street, but this guy we were actually trying to teach. Before that awkward turn of events: Here we were talking about the church, and here´s the conversation I heard in my less than perfect Spanish comprehension. ¨There´s something special about it. It really stands out to me. I have a lot of interest in it. It´s something I want.¨ So I´m just nodding along until I realize that all of the "it's" are actually "you's." Ah! Quick backtrack. He was willing to promise to wait for a year. He starting quoting Bible verses about how important marriage was. Yikes. And there´s another Antiguo Investigador. Sigh.
I fell in love with some people this week. And not that kind of love. I feel like it´s been a little while in coming in this area to really find some people to love.
First, Yulendy, a menos activa, like 25, and she´s working on coming back! She came yesterday to church for the first time in years. We had a super great couple of lessons last week with her.
Then, Luisa. She is sassy. We´ve only had one lesson with her. She´s the ¨wife¨ of a menos activo that we´ve never seen. Probably late 20´s. She asked us why, if the Book of Mormon was about Jesus Christ, and we worship Him, not Mormon, the name Mormon was so big and the name Jesus Christ was so small. Hmmm. Then she told us, when we asked her, that her purpose in life was earning money. Her one desire is to be rich. She said, "What good is happiness if you don´t have food?" We taught her to pray, which she´s never done before (a bit surprising for this country. Most people at least have a couple memorized ones they pull out) and hopefully she did it.
One of the Dominican sisters braided part of my hair. It was amazing, she did it in like 3 minutes total. They were staying over for the first ever Hermana Conference, where we talked about everything from leading music to washing our shoes for church. I parted my hair over to try to hide them to look a little more classy for the conference. The braids were in for three days, but alas, I took them out for church.
I´ll send pics.
Love you all lots, thanks for everything! And thanks in advance for the birthday package. I told the Elders it´s completely necessary that I get it by the 9th :)
Love, Hna Sarah Peck
