| Rusbert´s "thing" saying he´s the best chess player in the country! |
Sometimes a pat on the back is what you need most on the mission, but unfortunately there´s usually not anyone around to give you one. So this last week we had a goal to actually acknowledge our ¨pat on the back moments¨. Both me and my comp tend to be very demanding of ourselves, and overlook the little victories. This change in thinking made a huge difference this week. Every lesson that went well deserved a pat on the back. Record high lessons with members, pat on the back. It helped us remember we´re not failure missionaries just because some people don´t pay attention, or aren´t at the citas. We gave ourselves a pat on the back for going to pick up five different people for church on Sunday. Even though not any of them came. We found a lot of new people to teach this week, so that´s a definite relief.
Lots of people this week have been making casabe, which is grated yucca made into a tortilla type thing. It´s pretty good! Especially when it´s fresh.
Pioneer day was really great. At lunch I made everyone share a pioneer story from their family. Hna Saenz turned her apron into a bonnet. I was the only one whose story wasn´t about their parents. We had pioneers in England (mine), Mexico, Phillipines, and the US. It was really cool to hear them all. Then we made super delicious cobbler, because cobbler reminds me of dutch oven and dutch ovens remind me of camping and camping reminds me of pioneers. So it worked.
One afternoon, we went to visit Yoanna, but she was in the hospital in Azua with her little brother who has bronchitis and pneumonia. Instead, there was a portuguese man who rides a bike around helping people. He sat and talked to us about his life for a long time. I realized what a once in a life time experience that was: 2 American girls sitting in a Hatian´s yard, talking to a Portuguese man about his life in Portugal, Africa, Venezuela, and the DR.
Guess that´s it. Life´s good.
